The spouse(s) of both the victim and the offender experience are also affected by the exploitation. Some of the effects on them may be:
- feelings of betrayal
- can damage a marriage,
- becoming the focus of gossip,
- loss of faith, and
- loss of church community.
The pastoral leader and the victim often have close family and friends who are also caught in circle of effects caused by exploitation.
Friends may have been asked to lie in order to help cover up the exploitative relationship. They, like others, may experience
- a sense of betrayal
- loss of faith in God and the religious institution
- guilt for being complicit in the situation
